As a freelance writer, there are lots of different directions you can take. You can focus on a certain type of deliverable, industry, type of client, and so on. One lesser-known option for freelance writers, though: UX writing—yes, the buttons, titles, notifications, and more.

Somewhere around 2014 I encountered the term “microcopy” (the predecessor to “UX writing”) for the first time, and let’s just say it didn’t have me jumping out of my seat with excitement. 

UX writing involves a lot of different tasks. Freelancing involves a lot of different tasks. Put those two together, and well, chances are no two days will look the same.

I’ve done editing. I’ve done content writing. I’ve done copywriting.

Writing copy for things like buttons and pop-ups can be kind of hard to grasp.

The goal of UX writing is communication, and communication in Digital Land is successful when it helps users move through an app or website efficiently and successfully.
