Wait… what is UX writing?
Glad you asked! UX writing describes the words (copy) in digital products, like apps and websites, that guide you through the platform, telling you what information to enter, where to click, and what will happen next.
Sure, it’s often short strings of text—2 words here, 1 sentence there—but UX writing is essential for being able to use websites and apps. It’s how companies communicate with their customers these days.
Code is crucial and design is dandy, but without words… users are, well, literally lost in cyberspace.
UX writing has exploded in the last few years
As everything goes digital, more companies and teams set their sights on creating and improving user experiences, more words are needed to round out and guide those user experiences.
There’s never been a better time to break into UX writing

Here’s why I love UX writing (and why I think you will, too):
You’re writing words that actually affect people’s lives, every single day! Think about it: The app diabetics use to track their insulin, the small-business loan website, the communication app people use to talk to their family around the world—all of them have UX writing!
You don’t have to stuff your writing with business jargon or inflated promises, like marketing and sales writing often has you do.
You typically get to work with a team of designers, product managers, and more and actually impact how the final product looks and works.
And if that’s not enough, here’s why you should really care:
According to Glassdoor, the average copywriter salary in the US is about $59,000 a year. The average UX writer salary is about $112,000 a year. Almost double!!
Rates for freelancers stack right up with those numbers, too.
